March 2010 HELLO AND WELCOME! Everyone is invited to our meetings. Thursday, March 25, 2010 Meeting Location: Message from the President Hello all you Stitchers: It is so nice to see Spring for a few days, and the calendar says Saturday we will see spring for 3 months. But again this is Colorado. It was great to see so many at our February meeting. Welcome to our new members and guests. I love the opportunity to get to know everyone and find out the immense volume of sewing skills present. We have no attendance requirements for SRN or requirements to help run the organization. You are welcomed to pay your membership and get listed in the brochure without further involvement. However, it is impossible for others to recommend you if they don't know you or your work. So, you are encouraged to join us for a meeting so we can get to know you. Find out how SRN has increased members' businesses through meeting networking. We had a great February program discussing internet marketing and a presentation (thanks to LeNore Kerber and Sharon Ryan) of how to increase our business. We thank you, Karen, for making progress on the updated design of the SRN web site. Looking into a web site for my business has moved up my to-do list. The year is full of opportunities. Thank you to the outgoing board members and to the new members for stepping up to the plate and assisting in the business of running the organization. Our board turns over yearly so there are plenty of opportunities to share your administrative skills, talk to those who hold the position and get an idea of what is involved. Time flies. We will be going to print on the Spring brochure soon. Any changes or advertising money need to be in by April 15. Due to illness Stephanie Rosenbaum has decided to step down as marketing chairperson, and Judy Veyera has agreed to do it for another year. I am looking forward with trepidation, new prez jitters, to our March 25th meeting. Always stitching and referring; Toni Fitzwater Reminder: If you see a likely spot for sale or rent, for a future home for TACtile, please email the info tobuildingtactile@tactilearts.org. Dynamite Divas to Host Women's Spring Expo Day-long shopping and networking event will empower women to exercise their economic, political and social power. Broomfield, CO-Saturday, May 1, 2010. 10 AM until 4 PM "Women influence more than 85 percent of the purchasing decisions in America," said Tobi Hunt, event organizer, "but many women are still in financial darkness and completely unaware of their economic, political and social power in this country. Bella and I created the Dynamite Divas Women's Spring Expo to help women celebrate their strengths, independence, education, political and purchasing power." Six phenomenal renowned speakers will be presenting, and door prizes will be given away every 15 minutes. The event is open to all, with over 500 business and professional women expected to attend. Empower yourself and mingle amongst some of the most distinguished professionals in their field. Register for the Event Just $10 when you register online; $12 at the door. $5 of the entry fee goes to Safehouse of Boulder County Sewing Tips Before you've even opened your sewing pattern, make sure you have read the instructions thoroughly TWICE ! Follow each step carefully, and in order. There's always a reason why the steps are in the order that they are, so resist the temptation to skip or swap steps around! When you're buying fabric off a bolt, be sure to write down the care instructions that are on the label on the roll. Pin these instructions to your fabric until you are ready to use it. I'm sure we all have piles of fabric at home that we've bought a long time ago and have forgotten what sort of fabric it is and how to launder it. Before you buy fabric to go with your pattern, make sure that you've checked the instructions on the pattern to see if there are any particularly good fabrics to use with that pattern, plus any fabrics to avoid. Be sure to cover your sewing machine when you've finished using it. Dust and lint building up in and on your machine is the biggest cause of machine breakdowns.
