Meeting Summary

It was stunning, just stunning. The preview of the new brochure. "Well, didn't you know it would be?", says you. After the blood, sweat and tears of designing and drafting the layout, selling the ads, helping the sponsors get on board.............oh wait, that wasn't my blood, sweat and tears. It was Karen Niemi and MaryJo Regier, our hired gun, and Tracy Kreiling who wrangled the sponsors. And, as much confidence as I have in this crackerjack team, I still never expected what I saw. And just think, with this team doing the magic, it isn't as hard to be president as I can make it look!

So, you will have to come to the meeting to get your brochures to pass along. You will be the envy of your professional peers.

See you Thursday.
Christine

Girl Scout Display

Legacies: The 95th Anniversary Celebration of the Girl Scouts USA
Lakewood Heritage Center, 801 S Yarrow Street, Lakewood, Colorado.

This historical exhibit of clothing, photos, dolls and other artifacts reflects nearly 100 years of Girl Scout growth and change. Four of the dolls in the exhibit were clothed in uniforms created by four members of SRN. Debbie and Rachel Byrd, Marcie Heiser and May Shaw completed the set in March 2006. The dolls immediately were displayed at the Girl Scout offices in Denver, have been in constant use and are living at the Lakewood Heritage Center until August 24, 2007.

This summer SRN members Debbie Byrd, Gina Emily and May Shaw are creating four soft flannel dolls, each with a uniform, to be available for troops to handle and learn from. Two of the dolls will be dressed in Brownie uniforms from 1927-1936. The other two dolls will be wearing uniforms from 1948- 1963, Intermediate level (now called Juniors). These dolls are scheduled to be complete and ready for use this August. The soft doll pattern was designed by Debbie Byrd. The original doll was commissioned by Tracy Clevenger for her company, One Doll, LLC. Tracy generously agreed to allow the Girl Scouts to use the pattern at no cost beyond acknowledging her company.

Next in the plan for dolls will be a second set of the display dolls, again wearing uniforms from 1919/28, 1927/36, 1941/52 and 1948/63. These dolls are already in the beginning stages, followed soon by a set of four display dolls wearing native costumes from each of the four Girl Guide/Girl Scout World Centers, located in England, Switzerland, India and Mexico. There are no patterns for any of the clothing items, giving each SRN member a challenge of designing and constructing historically accurate uniforms or costumes from illustrations and photos.

The current set of dolls can be admired, along with all the other Girl Scout items, from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. If you, your sister or daughter or neighbor, were Girl Scouts, you'll enjoy this quick tour through the 95 years of Girl Scouts in the USA. If you have an interest in helping with future sewing Girl Scout projects, contact May Shaw - 303/759-3012, or e-mail MayShaw1@msn.com, being sure to include "SRN" in the subject line.
