Message from the President

We had a busy meeting in April. Judy Veyera was ratified as Advertising Chair, and Tracy Kreiling as Treasurer. We miss Carla, and hope she will continue to improve.

Mary Reynolds gave us a great look into costuming a traveling theater group. There is so much to do when you work in theater; it was so interesting on how it comes together.

We had brochures distributed at the Mancuso show at the Mart., April 29 -May 2. Our New Brochures are in! We will have them at the May 27th luncheon meeting at TACtile Arts Center, and after that, board members (located all over the metro area) will have a stock of brochures with them, when you need refills. What we need to do is leaving them in any second-hand clothing store, or retail outlet, that doesn't have their "own" seamstress for alterations, beauty salons, restaurants and any other place you can think of. The list of current displayed places will be available at the meeting.

Work is continuing on the Web site redesign, we should see changes over the next month. If you see something you question about it, let Karen Niemi know and she will check it out.

See you Thursday for another great chance to network with the other members. We will be in the gallery again as the impressive World Threads display will still be showing.

Always stitching and referring,
Toni Fitzwater TONI FITZWATER - 303.838.5122 - toni_fitzwater@msn.com Never underestimate the potential and power of the human spirit.

May Program

SRN member, Alicia Werner of The Zipper Lady fame, verifIed she will speak at our meeting on May 27. She will demo zipper styles/techniques, including the separating invisible zipper only she carries! Attendees will receive a sample packet (be there to find out.)

May 11, 2020 Board Meeting

Meeting called to order at 1:10 p.m at Perkins located at I25 and Colorado Blvd.

Attendees: Toni Fitzwater, Christine Hoyt, LeNore Kerber, Tracy Kreiling, Sharon Ryan Marci Heiser, & Susan Matthews. Karen Neimi and Judy Veyera were out of town.

Are we okay with the meeting format? The attendees believe that the structured nature of it is a good thing.

Need to establish the policy for the ads in the brochure. We need to control the size of the ads. The policy is to be standardized. Cost for half-page ads will be $100; business card ads will be $40; member ads will be $35. Same price for both brochures published each year.

Judy Veyera needs to contact the advertisers to tell them what the prices will be for future brochures. Ad payments need to go through Judy Veyera, Marketing, in order to control what size ad has been paid for and if more than 1 brochure is paid for at a time. We need to know which shows the brochures can be placed. Tracy Kreiling will create a list of the shows.

The Newsletter should be including the sponsors in the email list. No sales information; just a link for their websites.

What format do we want the Treasurer's report in: balance by account; income and expenditures; cost of brochure, website, phone, Constant Contact (for publishing newsletter), miscellaneous? Copies should be made of the checks and notations on what the checks are for.

Deb Kreek will be asked to put together a budget. Deb will be auditing the books every 3 months.

Susan Matthews will address the things that need to be corrected for the website.

All membership funds need to go through LeNore Kerber, Membership chair. Our experience with money being sent to the Treasurer is it causes difficulties for the other chairs to do their work in a timely manner.

Sponsor's payments for ads need to be collected in April and October by the Marketing Chair. The membership payments will be collected in February and March by the Membership Chair. LeNore will create an invoice for sponsors that will allow them to pay their membership and advertising one time a year.

There are problems with the SRN phone number (303- 346-3388). The recording should be changed so that there is an easy way to get to the right person. (i.e., find a seamstress; contact our website; instructors for our programs; advertising) and will give a direct phone number to reach the member in charge of that function. The phone system will accept messages and all messages will be collected by one person who will email the member that can take action on that message.

Tracy K. is going to check on the debit cards because they seem to be overdue.

Have the checks for membership go to LeNore K and she will deposit them into our USBank account.

On the web site, the sponsor's page should have a link to their web site and we have a receptacle link on their website. They should not be in our public links for we have a paid relationship with them.

Meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Sharon Ryan.

Choosing Fabric for Childrens' Clothing

The Weave -- Take a close look at the weave of the fabric. If you can see light between the fibers the fabric is loosely woven and odds are it will not hold up to the riggers a child will put clothing through. When the fibers are tightly woven they can not shift as easily as loosely woven fibers and dirt can not work it's way in between the fibers as easily which can lead to the fibers being destroyed.

Wrinkles --Wrinkle factors. If you wad a handful of the fabricand squeeze it in your hand, does it create wrinkles that don't relax when you smooth out the fabric? If it keeps sharp wrinkles, it's going to stay wrinkled in the finished garment as your child wears the garment.

Avoid Fading -- Clothing for children is going to need to be laundered and after many washings you don't want all of the color in the fabric to be washed out. Look at the print on the fabric, does the dye go through the fibers or is it rolled on and barely saturating the fibers. If the dye is not embedded in the fabric it will

Combining Fabrics -- To add details to childrens' clothing, it is common to combine two or more fabrics within the same garment. Be sure that the fabrics are colorfast before combining them. Colorfast information should be on the end of the fabric bolt but if it is not, you can test it by placing a small scrap of the fabric in a dish of water... preferably in a white bowl so you can really see if any of the color leeches into the water. Always preshrink fabric before sewing a garment.

Comfort -- Canvas is a very durable fabric but is sure wouldn't be comfortable. Choose fabrics which will move as the person wearing the garment moves. Choose fabric that is not rough or irritating on the skin. This can easily be tested by rubbing the fabric on the inside of your wrist.

Grow Ability -- In most cases children out grow their clothing before the clothing wears out. If you want clothes that offer a bit more time in a child's wardrobe, remember knits and elastic. The less "fitted" a garment is, the longer it is apt to fit and be worn.
